Contractor's Corner: Pro Tips for Summer Maintenance

Besides mowing lawns, weeding gardens, and fertilizing your soils, there are some other Home Maintenance items that should be on your radar this time of year.

Here are some items that we don't always think about right now, but are going to need attention, so we need to maintain them!

Clean out the grill and wipe it down

Regular maintenance throughout the Summer season gives you peace of mind for future grilling- whether that be next week or next Summer! Before Fall, it is important to check gas lines, burner covers, and other elements that may need replacing before giving it one last thorough cleaning and storing it away. Fogg's Hardware located in Norwich, VT has a great selection of grill covers depending on the size and type of grill you use.

Clean out gutters

Check that all downspouts are securely fastened to your home's exterior. Check for clogs, holes, rust, sagging, and cracks - especially at the seams. Trim branches that hang over your gutters. Come Fall, you want to feel confident that they can take on extra debris and prevent water damage to your home throughout all the seasons.

Check your roof

Your roof protects the integrity of your entire home and it is a crucial part of the ventilation in your home during these warmer months. Make any necessary repairs for slipping shingles, flashing, and check for weather damage.

This is a great time of year to get your septic pumped

The timing on this one depends upon the size and overall usage of your system. Consult with your septic company to see what they recommend and put it on your schedule.

If you have a home generator, now is the time to make sure that the maintenance schedule is up to date

In recent years our weather patterns have been all over the place and making sure that you and your home are all set is important.

I walk around our house every year to check for any flaking or peeling paint

It just takes a few extra minutes to scrape and touch up any problem areas.

And, as much as it pains me to say this, the heating season is coming.

Lastly, this is the perfect time of year to get furnaces and boilers cleaned. If there are any issues with your system, now is the time to get it repaired!
